<image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>The Magic & Joy of Exploding Dots by Kiran Ananthpur Bacche ( with contributions form James Tanton and James Prapp) Why I like this book…. As someone new to Exploding Dots and having watched the YouTube videos, I wanted a physical reference I could touch and dog ear. I was looking for ways to use this with the younger set. While this book did not lay that out for me, it provided enough structures where I could then figure out how to navigate this with my gifted first-grade learners.</image:caption>

<image:title>Literature</image:title>
<image:caption>Why it’s important for children to read mathematical literatureStorybooks have been used to help children develop skills such as imagination, reflection, perspective-taking, and understanding social relationships (Browne, 1996); empathy (Holm, 2012); language, creativity, problem-solving, and movement skills (Gabbei & Clemmens, 2005); and mathematics (Hintz & Smith, 2013). Literature can enhance mathematical learning, as it helps build an understanding of mathematical concepts and skills through stories and illustrations, and supports the development of problem-solving skills. (Fettig, Schultrz, and Ostrasky) Children’s literature can help provide meaningful context and explanations of mathematical concepts, offer a review of these concepts, promote the development of number sense and critical thinking, and model interesting problems. When children make connections with concepts, their interest grows. When they can connect with a story, they become more interested in math. As they read or listen to a story, they learn that math is everywhere, not just in their math class. Stories can help them access prior knowledge and connect the mathematical concepts to their everyday lives, as well as see themselves as mathematicians. Fiction books based on mathematical concepts are wonderful explorations for both mathematically and verbally gifted children. Each finds what they need in the texts. Verbally gifted children can access the mathematical content presented in stories. Mathematically gifted students tend to access the content via stories at younger than recommended ages.</image:caption>

<image:title>Literature</image:title>
<image:caption>Why it’s important for adults to read mathematical literature There is a wealth of rich literature to help parents increase their confidence with mathematics and to support their children’s mathematical growth. By reading books and articles about mathematics, parents model for their children the value of lifelong learning. Literature can also provide practical strategies and activities to help parents show their children that they can enjoy and succeed in math. Believing in one's self is the first step toward success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Literature for Parents</image:title>
<image:caption>This book for teachers and parents brings to life the idea that math should be fun, engaging, and is meant to be enjoyed. “Math Recess is a breathless ride!” (Kimberly Morrow-Leong, NCSM 2018 program chair, author of Mathematize It!) Why I like it: Math Recess empowers the teacher and parent to think of ways for their children to practice skills without being bored by skills practice. It is an easy read that often had me laughing, nodding, and taking off to solve problems posed. Readers cannot help but want to engage and understand mathematics.</image:caption>

<image:title>Literature for Parents</image:title>
<image:caption>This book is about math, all things math, yet it isn’t. It is a humorous and intellectual text that engages readers to feel empowered in understanding how math works in our daily lives and is filled with “bad drawings” to illustrate the author’s attempt to answer three questions: Why do I need to learn this? When am I ever going to use it? Why is it so hard? Why I like it: I laughed, I smiled, I felt connected to the content. It had me pondering experiences presented and ways to rethink them.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d27d160a4c89200018b1ffe/1563954409856-W98PLKF4H5H54CLSMK0E/Moonwalking+with+einstein+book+cover.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Literature for Parents</image:title>
<image:caption>This book is about more than the history of memory and the decline over centuries. and the impact it has on learning. It also gives great, clear techniques to improve your memory- the ability to remember, not memorize... Why I like it: Moonwalking with Einstein is a really fun read, intellectually engaging, and offers practical ideas that I now use to remember important information. It validated the idea that math is not about memorization of rules and facts, but rather about understanding underlining concepts. Memory without meaning is meaningless. It may be tangentially connected to math if you squint hard.</image:caption>
